Diagnosis of otosclerosis
Otosclerosis is an inner ear disease that causes deafness. It consists of a particular form of progressive osteosis (rounded bone augmentation) which affects certain areas of the bone labyrinth.
Diagnosis
There are 3 progressive phases characterised by anatomo-pathological changes:
- osteoid congestion: Haversian canals (vascular canals of bone tissue) dilate;
- spongiosis: osteoclastic resorption that forms a sponge-like appearance;
- sclerosis: osteoblastic activity causes the irregular buildup of new osteo-fibrillar material.
Diagnosis should be made by tympanometry or with a liminal tone audiometric examination.
