Ear malformations can be corrected by surgery but in cases where there is a need to reconstruct an external auditory canal, hearing cannot be restored. This is because the development of the tympanic membrane and of the middle ear is insufficient. As for the reconstruction of a new auricle, it is possible to operate with extensive plastic surgery. These surgeries can be useful from a mental point of view even if the cosmetic appearance is not fully restored. The restoration of hearing capacity is possible through tympanoplasty procedures.
