Diseases of the oral cavity
A common pathology is carcinoma of the mouth which is a malignant tumour closely linked to lifestyle and whose incidence varies from region to region in Italy.
Diagnosis
Oral cancer is almost always caused by smoking, alcohol and/or poor nutrition. Possible warning signs:
- persistent swelling of the mucosal membranes;
- a reddish white spot that does not heal;
- a wound that does not heal
- If recognised early, oral cancer can be successfully treated. Diagnostic delays are generally due to the lack of knowledge of this type of tumour which is often confused with other more frequent diseases, such as dental abscesses.
